Description
An image of the first nitroglycerin oil well shooting wagon in Pittsburgh, owned by Al Arnold. Oil well shooting is a method of improving the performance of an oil well by removing obstructions to drilling and loosening up the shale to improve oil flow. The caption (appearing in reverse on the image) reads "Al Arnold Nitro Glycerine Oil Well Shooting Wagon – First in the world – Steam power. Photo made by T. R. Hartley Oct. 1901 on Bigelow Boulevard, Pittsburgh, Pa. The Index (Pgh.) of Sep. 7, 1901 says: The first nitro glycerine carriage was sent by Pgh. Automobile co. to Mars Station on Wed. (Sept. 4, 1901) Thos M. Galey.” According to the information written by Thomas Galey at a later date states "Col. Albert V. Crookston, who was Pres. Of Pittsburgh Automobile Co., sits on the front dash-board box, his hands on the shoulder of Geo. Hailman. Lou Vitsack, the very first automobile mechanic in Pittsburgh, is at the tiller. Al Arnold sits beside Lou on the front seat. Geo. Bailey is on rear seat.”
