Description
Aftermath of Farmers Bank Building implosion. The Farmer's Bank Building was located on the block spanning Fourth Avenue, Fifth Avenue, and Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh. The 27-story Beaux-arts building built in 1902 was designed by Alden & Harlow. It was demolished in May 1997 to make space for construction of the Lazarus department store which existed briefly from 1999-2004. The building was known for the Judy Penzer-designed mural of Pittsburgh athletes. The mural was painted by Gregory Puchalski and Robert Harmon in 1992, spanned approximately 11 stories (or 15, depending on source). It featured Roberto Clemente, Mario Lemieux, "Mean" Joe Green, Jack Lambert and Bill Mazeroski.
