Description
A view of the Union Switch & Signal (US&S) Headquarters Building on the shore of the Monongahela river. George Westinghouse founded Union Switch & Signal in 1881. He relocated the company from downtown Pittsburgh to Swissvale in 1887. Like Westinghouse Airbrake Company in nearby Wilmerding, US&S specialized in railroad safety; specifically closed track circuits and interlocking switch and signal controls. The Swissvale plant, however, closed in 1986 and was razed. In December of 1996 US&S was merged with Ansaldo Signaling and Transportation Systems (Ansaldo STS), and in 2009 US&S was renamed to Ansaldo STS USA.
