Description
Rodef Shalom Congregation’s first building, on Eighth Street in downtown Pittsburgh, was the first synagogue in Western Pennsylvania. Construction of the 56-foot by 86-foot Temple building began early in 1861, the cornerstone was laid in April, and services were held in the first floor schoolrooms as construction continued in the sanctuary above. Charles F. Bartberger (1824-1896), a German-born Pittsburgh architect, supervised the construction of the Gothic-style building. The contractors were Moore & Chambers of Allegheny City. The sanctuary had an elevated central pulpit surrounded by a railing, with pews at each side and an upper gallery. The circular Ark, placed opposite the entrance, had sliding doors with pillars at each side and was covered with a crimson curtain. A consecration ceremony, led by William Armhold and Josiah Cohen, took place on March 20, 1862.
