Description
A twenty-five foot high 21,000 gallon holding tank at National Transit Oil Company's Nedskey Pumping Station at the intersection of what is now McKnight Road and Ingomar Road in Town of McCandless, Allegheny County, PA. was struck twice by lightening on July 7, 1929. Two hundred men from over six area volunteer fire companies and a chemical crew sent from Oil City, PA battled to contain the fire. The tank buckled, spewing burning oil. Flames could be seen for twenty miles. Flaming oil spilled into Pine Creek, igniting a bridge and trees a half mile away. Local residents dug a fire bank to contain the pool of oil. An estimated $50,000 in damages resulted. This photo shows the station at a later date with McKnight Road in the foreground. At present, the property is a paved parking lot. Photos shows snow-covered ground.
