  • Once the Pittsburgh interchange of the Turnpike was completed at Monroeville in 1950, the potential for bringing customers into Monroeville for shopping was quickly realized. The value of Route 22 was seen by a group of businessmen from Columbus, Ohio headed by Don M. Casto, a pioneer in developing shopping malls.
