Description
Beginning in the 1920s, the pace of road-building quickened. The road from Monroeville to Turtle Creek was hard-surfaced (macadamized). The old William Penn Highway, built in the 1920s, and following the route of the Northern Pike, was the first paved road to Pittsburgh. But local roads like James Street remained a dirt road well into the 1930s.
