Description
Portrait of metal sculptor, Harry Bertoia, in his Bally, Pennsylvania studio working on one of his untitled welded projects. Italian-born American sculptor, designer, and inventor, Bertoia is best known for his innovative metal sculptures and iconic furniture designs. After immigrating to the United States as a teenager, he studied at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts and the Cranbrook Academy of Art studying along other artistic greats as Florence Schust Knoll, Charles Eames, and Eero Saarinen. In the 1950s, he gained international recognition for the Bertoia Chair series. He is also known for his "Sonambient" works which generate musical tones when moved. The 1950s also saw the family's move to Bally, Pennsylvania, where Bertoia established the studio in which he would create until his death.
