Description
Wylie Avenue was a center of black entertainment, economic, and social life in the 1940s, fifties, and sixties. Mr. Harris (no relation to the photographer) wears a white coat and places one hand on the shoulder of his son in military uniform. Asa Harris, owner of the Harris Grill, was the father of Earl Harris, a sergeant stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., in 1942. Mr. Harris other arm embraces Tutty Harris, Earl's wife and a waitress at the restaurant. The man standing on the left has been identified as Earl Blessitt. Blessitt and his wife Irene lived at 2625 Webster Avenue in the Hill. In the background wearing a hat and coat is Josh Gibson (1911-1947), Negro League baseball star who played for both the Homestead Grays (1932, 1937-1947) and the Pittsburgh Crawfords (1933-1937).
