The CIO, Congress of Industrial Organizations, was formed when the leaders of the United Mine Workers, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and representatives of the Textile Workers and the Typographers unions joined together in 1938 and left the American Federation of Labor (AFL). By 1941 the CIO had succeeded in organizing the steel industry. In 1955 the CIO merged with the AFL and became the AFL-CIO.
