Description
Former president Harry S. Truman shares a laugh with a Hill District crowd during the 1956 presidential campaign. Truman stands on a platform accompanied by four men including Robert E. Pappy" Williams, city magistrate and first black ward chairman in Pittsburgh. The platform carries slogans: "VOTE STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC", "FOR PRESIDENT ADLAI STEVENSON", and "FOR VICE PRESIDENT ESTES KEFAUVER." Pittsburgh politician Tom Forrester, later a County Commissioner for Allegheny County, dressed in a dark suit, white shirt, and signature bow tie, may be visible in the center of the lower right quadrant. Near center left, a campaign car decorated with stars and stripes carries signs: "VOTE DEMOCRATIC", "[illegible] CLARK [illegible] SENATE", and "TRUMAN WELCOME." The Silver Bar in the upper right and the No. 82 Lincoln street car visible at center top locate the event at the intersection of Centre Avenue and Dinwiddie Street in the Hill District. In the lower right corner are several members of a military band. The photographer may have taken this shot from an upper floor of the No. 2 Police Station on Centre Avenue."
