Description
K. Leroy Irvis, a political activist with the National Urban League, and later as a state representative, led the fight for better employment opportunities for blacks in Pittsburgh. His poster reads Protest! Protest!, Deliberate Tokenism in Employment is Poison To America, NAACP." He is speaking with police Inspector/Assistant Superintendent Lawrence Maloney (1910-1969). The target for this demonstration may have been U.S. Steel. Unrest over the company's policies later manifested itself in a riot. In 1958 Irvis became the first African American to be elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He was re-elected to that seat for 15 consecutive terms. Irvis is currently the Distinguished Presidential Scholar at Temple University."
