  • The Iron City Elks Lodge No. 17 Band on the Steps of the Carnegie Library, 1911 Wylie Ave. This branch of Carnegie Libraries moved to 419 Dinwiddie St. in 1982, the original site is now a religious institution. This band has three female majorettes and an all male group of musicians, wearing a variety of uniforms. The instruments present in the image are trombone, tuba, flute, clarinet, saxophone, snare drum, bass drum, and symbols. Social clubs were the first building block used to create a strong black community that was self-sufficient despite lack of funding and education.
