  • Pittsburgh Mayor David L. Lawrence takes a swing with a sledge hammer at a chisel held in the keystone of Old City Hall by city councilman A. L. Wolk, while councilman Thomas Gallagher and others look on. Old City Hall located at Smithfield Street and Virgin Alley. The cornerstone was laid August 8, 1868, and the building was constructed between 1869 and 1872 for the sum of $408,790. It was sold August 8, 1952, for nearly $2,500,000 to a real estate group planning to demolish it for commercial development.
