Joanne MacKay served as governess for the Edward Vose Babcock family for ten years, from 1912 to 1922, after emigrating from the Shetland Islands. E.V. Babcock, owner and founder of Babcock Lumber Company, presided as mayor of Pittsburgh, Pa., from 1918 through 1922.
The Joanne MacKay Photographs include photographs of the Babcock estate in Valencia, Pa., known as Vosemary farm. The photographs also include a portrait of Mayor Babcock, an album of camping photographs, photographs of Belgium's King Albert visit to Pittsburgh in 1919, and a number of unidentified group and individual images. Also included is a small publication titled, Constructive Pittsburgh: a review of the Babcock Administration
