Members of the Negley Family were early inhabitants of the Pittsburgh area, establishing themselves in the East Liberty suburb in 1778. By the following century, the family was among the city's financial elite, owning much of the land in the quickly developing East Liberty, which was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1868. Edward C. Negley served in the Civil War, reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was later appointed postmaster of Pittsburgh and deputy sheriff of Allegheny County.
The Negley Family Papers include a deed of William A. Kober, the wills of Barbara A. and Daniel Negley, a photograph of Edward C. Negley, Negley family genealogical research, and a photocopied letter from James R. Mellon about the East Liberty Presbyterian Church.
