This collection includes materials relating to Margaret Smith Badgett's family in Western Pennsylvania. Margaret Smith Badgett was born in 1913 and raised in Bellevue, Pennsylvania. In 1939, she married Stephen H. Badgett, who was an engineer for the Pressed Steel Cars Company in Pittsburgh. The Margaret Smith Badgett Papers consists of scrapbooks, correspondence, newspapers, and photographs.

History

Margaret Smith Badgett was born in 1913 to Harry J. Smith and Jennie Maude Pierce Smith. In 1918, the family moved to Bellevue, Pa, where Harry Smith had a majority ownership of the Allegheny-Butler Gas and Oil Company and his wife was a schoolteacher. The family was active in the Bellevue community. Mrs. Pierce Smith was president of the Bellevue Outlook Club and the family attended Bellevue Presbyterian Church.

Margaret Smith Badgett graduated from Bellevue High School in 1931, and in the same year, the family moved east to Danville, Pa. After graduating from highschool, Smith Badgett attended Pennsylvania State College and in 1935 was awarded a bachelor’s degree. In 1939 she married Stephen H. Badgett, who was an engineer for the Pressed Steel Cars Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsyvlania. Margaret Smith Badgett died in 2001 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Scope and Content Notes

The Margaret Smith Badgett Papers consists of scrapbooks, correspondence, newspapers, and photographs. A large portion of the collection consists of papers from Smith Badgett’s parents and her mother’s family from Clarion, Pa., including family correspondence from Clarion County, which was passed down through this side of the family. Pertaining to Margaret Smith Badgett are materials from summers spent in her youth at Camp Myler near Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, her high school years at Bellevue High School, her college years at Penn State, and her subsequent marriage to Stephen H. Badgett.

Box 1 contains three scrapbooks. The first scrapbook is Margaret Smith Badgett’s political science scrapbook containing newspaper clippings pertaining to the National Recovery Administration another containing her Bellevue High School materials, and a third that belonged to Smith Badgett’s mother and contains poetry excerpts, newspaper clippings, and letters.

Box 2 consists of materials related to Jennie Maude Pierce Smith and Harry J. Smith including family correspondence from Clarion County; materials related to Margaret Smith Badgett and Stephen H. Badgett; printed materials including photograph books from Clarion, Pennsylvania a report from the Philadelphia State Hospital, and a score card from Western Golf Course which was located on Pittsburgh’s North side; student newspapers from Smith Badgett’s high school and college years; and church and performance programs.

Box 3 contains photographs of family and friends of Margaret Smith Badgett. Also included are a reel of film from the Pressed Cars Company of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three rolled photographs from Camp Myler; and an autograph album containing the signatures of members of the Bellevue Outlook Club.
