Ezio Alicandri was born in Italy on August 12, 1922. After immigrating to the United States in 1929, the Alicandri family settled in Shaler, Pa. Ezio Alicandri participated in the European Campaign during World War II as a gunner in the 83rd Thunderbolt Division. Alicandri fought in Normandy, Loire Valley, Luxembourg, Hurtgen Forest, the Ardennes, Elbe Bridgehead, and the Rhine. On July 6, 1944, Alicandri was wounded during a campaign in France, for which he was awarded the bronze star and the Purple Heart. After returning to Pittsburgh, he became active in the community, joining the Cherry City Volunteer Fire Department, the VFW Brentwood, and the American Legion of Etna. Ezio Alicandri died on July 4, 2002.
The Ezio Alicandri Papers consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, reproductions and reprints of newspaper articles, and printed material. The materials mainly pertain to the Army's 83rd Infantry Division Thunderbolts and Alicandri's service during World War II. The correspondence consists primarily of a telegram informing the Alicandri family that Ezio was wounded in France, progress reports, and official army correspondence. This collection also contains many newspaper clippings, reproductions, and reprints pertaining to the 83rd Thunderbolt Division, other veterans, and their activities both during and after World War II. The printed material in the collection documents some of the 83rd Thunderbolt Division's activities after the war including a convention program, directories, and a veteran's memorial dedication program.
