History

Born October 12, 1896 in Russia, Myer William Levine acquired status as a citizen of the United States through the naturalization of his father, Abram H. Levine. Between the years of 1914 and 1919, Levine received an education from a variety of institutions, including Evening High School, North Industrial School, and the University of Pittsburgh.

He held numerous positions and changed professions frequently. At the age of seventeen, he was a salesman and general office manager for the Keystone Tire Company on Wood Street in 1913. Two years later, Levine worked as a bookkeeper, stenographer, and general office manager for the Rubenstein Feed Company on Webster Avenue. He held a similar position at I.M. Harris on Fifth Avenue the following year.

In 1917, Levine began work as a stenographer at the Naturalization Service of Pittsburgh. It was during this time that Levine became interested in participating in World War I. He applied for many positions within the United States military, particularly for stenographer positions overseas. He was drafted in August of 1917, but was honorably discharged due to medical conditions that prevented him from serving.

Levine was also socially active in the Pittsburgh area and was involved with the Eternal Club, a group of local young women that participated in social, literary, and charitable tasks. The Bunch, a club of young men founded by Levine, also sponsored events in honor of the Eternal Club. A writer of poetry and prose, he composed songs and speeches for the two clubs.
