Angeles Lopez-Portillo Stiteler, a native of Mexico City, Mexico, relocated permanently to the United States at the age of twelve. In 1948, she moved with her husband, attorney Edward S. Stiteler, to Western Pennsylvania. Angeles Stiteler received her BA from Seton Hill University and her MA from Duquesne University. She was an Associate Professor Emerita of Spanish at Seton Hill University where she taught for thirty years. She has been involved in many activities and attended conferences relating to the Latino community in Western Pennsylvania.
The Angeles Stiteler Papers are comprised of a variety of items relating to the Latino community in Pennsylvania. This includes materials from the Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs from 1995 and 1997. Stiteler attended conferences pertaining to the Advisory Commission and collected materials such as newsletters and agendas detailing various activities. The commission was created to advise the governor on issues affecting the Latino community and the development of policies and legislature to enhance the standing of the Latino community in Pennsylvania through education, economics and housing, and political empowerment.
In addition to the Governor's Advisory Commission, Stiteler also collected materials from other Latino conferences such as the Annual Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition Conference and Summit. This conference was organized by Latino leaders to address community issues such as the push for English-only policies and Affirmative Action. Also in the collection are flyers advertising Latino cultural events around the city. Stiteler was a Spanish language professor and the flyers reflect events held by student clubs and organizations for the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Seton Hill University.
Stiteler also collected bulletins, published articles, and news clippings that address the struggles and concerns of the local Pittsburgh Latino community as well as communities across the nation. The materials include the Pittsburgh Hispanic newsletter (1988-1990) and the Noticiero bi-monthly bulletin (1988-2002), a publication of the Pittsburgh's Latin American Cultural Union. Also included are thesis papers and reports relating to the Latino community.
Included in the collection are materials produced by the Pennsylvania Minority Business Development Authority (PMBDA), documenting the availability of loans for minority business leaders. In addition to this, reports and information about Latino business resources and leadership can be found. Finally, the collection contains materials relating specifically to the Puerto Rican community of Philadelphia including cultural programs and resources, a report from the National Puerto Rican Coalition, Inc. on poverty, and a book of photography documenting the Puerto Rican community of the Delaware Valley.
