Abstract
Little is known about the Galloway family except what may be taken from these papers. Given the limited material readily available on the Galloway family, exact relations, birth and death dates are difficult to determine. Robert Galloway (c1792-1837) was a Scots-Irish miller and farmer in Cookstown of Washington Township in Fayette County. These papers include correspondence, financial material, samples of fiction writing and printed items documenting the Galloway's lives in Western Pennsylvania, the Ohio Frontier and the Middle West. Though not comprehensive to any degree, these papers document two generations of a Scots-Irish family in Fayette County and the Ohio Frontier in the ante-bellum period.

Biographical Sketch of the Galloway Family

Little is known about the Galloway family except what may be taken from these papers. Given the limited material readily available on the Galloway family, exact relations, birth and death dates are difficult to determine. Robert Galloway (c1792-1837) was a Scots-Irish miller and farmer in Cookstown of Washington Township in Fayette County. He died at age 45 in 1837 and his wife, Anne who was born in 1784, lived into the 1850s. After Robert's passing, Anne lived with her son Samuel and then with Joseph by 1850. Robert and Anne Galloway are believed to have had at least five children (listed in the order of birth): Mary, Samuel, Robert T., Susan (or Susanna) and Joseph. At the time of Robert's death in 1837, provisions were made for their "minor children," with the McKee family. Indications are that these children were referring to Susan and Joseph.

Mary Galloway Moss is thought to be the oldest child of Robert and Anne Galloway. Little is known of their life outside of the range of correspondence sent by the Moss from 1834-1846. The Moss family lived on the Ohio frontier and entertained their brothers on numerous occasions. While James Moss' occupation is not clear, he did operate a tavern for some time and seemed to have an interest in politics as he occasionally mentioned rally and politics in his letters to his mother-in-law and brother-in-law. The Moss family lost at least two children before they reached the age of two while in Ohio. James' sister, Margrit McKee and her husband took care of the Anne and Robert Galloway's "minor children" upon the death of Robert in 1837. Next oldest is Samuel Galloway (c1805-1875), who assumed the management of the family farm when his father died in 1837. Samuel later held a number of elected offices in Fayette County including the Court of Appeals (1841), assessor (1864), school director (1871) and auditor from 1872 to 1873. Robert T. Galloway (1809-1885) attended law school in Uniontown from the late 1830s through 1842 and was later elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1845. Robert remained in Pennsylvania until the mid-1850s when he moved to Davenport, Iowa and formed a partnership in a law office specializing in the booming real estate market in the Middle West. Robert remained in close contact with his family in Fayette County. Susan, or Susanna (c1825-1890), married Stephen Patron, also of Washington Township, whose family was one of the earliest settlers in Fayette County. Their son was Reverend Joseph Galloway Patron, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport. Joseph Galloway is most likely the youngest Galloway child and his only known occupation was his election to the office of the assessor in 1853.

Scope and Content Notes

These papers include correspondence, financial material, samples of fiction writing and printed items documenting the Galloway's lives in Western Pennsylvania, the Ohio Frontier and the Middle West. Though not comprehensive to any degree, these papers document two generations of a Scots-Irish family in Fayette County and the Ohio Frontier in the ante-bellum period. Most noteworthy is the correspondence of Robert T. Galloway from Uniontown and Davenport, Iowa and that of Mary and James Moss to various Galloway family members from the Ohio Frontier in the early 19th century. All of the correspondence is family related and are arranged by the author. Many of these letters were written to Anne Galloway by her children and are arranged with Series II. Financial material, especially related to the estate of Robert Galloway, also covers each of the children.

The Galloway Papers are arranged in two series. Series have been designated for the papers of Anne and Robert Galloway and for the papers of other Galloway family members.
