History

The International News Service (INS) was founded by William Randolph Hearst in 1909 so that Hearst could have a news service for his own papers. International News Photos, the picture arm of the INS, was established soonafter. Time magazine called the INS approach "splash and dash" further explaining that, " editors could rely on the A.P. for the dimensions of the cathedral, the U.P. for the mood of the ceremony, and the I.N.S. (sometimes) for an interview with the barmaid across the way." On May 24, 1958 International News Service merged with the United Press Associations to become United Press International (UPI). UPI was later purchased by CORBIS.

The Associated Press was established as (and still is) a not-for-profit news cooperative. It was formed in the spring of 1846 by five daily newspapers in New York City to share the cost of transmitting news of the Mexican-American War by boat, horse express, and telegraph. The WirePhoto network was launched in 1935. It initially connected 24 cities and allowed all papers on the network to receive transmitted photographs simultaniously. The Associated Press maintains a photograph library of over 10 million images.
