Description
Prior to 1889 little is known about the Benney Family except that two men named Benney were librarians for the City of Allegheny public school system. James Benney III was the son of James and Ann Friend Benney and possibly the grandson of James W. Benney, the second librarian for the City of Allegheny public school system. The family lived in the Borough of Emsworth for a short period before moving to 4241 Fifth Avenue, near Craig Street, in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. James Benney III took a number of photographs of Pittsburgh landmarks, as well as domestic pictures of the family’s home in Emsworth, Pennsylvania, and various buildings in that community.
