Description
East Liberty is located approximately 4.2 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh. It was founded in 1758 when Brigadier General John Forbes built a road through the area during his campaign against the French stronghold at Fort Duquesne. Another prominent resident to live in the East Liberty area was Alexander Negley, who is known as the “Father of East Liberty” because he named the area after his wife’s farm. Negley, a civil engineer, designed the routes of many local roads including Penn Avenue. The community was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1868 and during much of the nineteenth century the area became a popular residential spot for Pittsburgh’s wealthiest families, including the Mellon, Larimer, Roup, and Baum families.
