Description
The main stairway in the Allegheny County Courthouse at Grant Street and Fifth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), who never lived to see them completed, designed the Allegheny Courthouse and Jail. Construction began in 1884 and was completed in 1888. According to the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, the Courthouse consists of a large hollow rectangle 301 feet by 209 feet, having a basement, five stories and attics on each side with an interior court 145 feet by 70 feet. The style of the Courthouse is generally Southern French and Spanish Romanesque, but the form of the building reflects other sources as well.
