Description
Isabel Bevier (1860-1942) was a professor of natural sciences at PCW from 1888-1897. A graduate of the University of Wooster and the Harvard Summer School, Bevier taught courses in geology, botany, physiology, and physical science. According to college historian Laberta Dysart, the college's chemistry department was, under Bevier's guidance, named the official agent of the United States Department of Agriculture for food analysis in Western Pennsylvania from 1894-1897. Bevier left PCW in 1897 to devote more time to her increasing interest in dietetics and went on to further her studies at Western Reserve University and MIT. After teaching chemistry for a year and a half at Lake Erie College, Bevier accepted a position as a professor of household science at the University of Illinois, where she remained for twenty-one years. Bevier is credited as a pioneer in the home economics movement and helped domestic science earn a respected place in college level education. Over the years, Bevier kept in touch with friends and colleagues at PCW and returned to campus on February 11, 1925 for a lecture and reception. The inscription on the back of this photograph reads: "Miss B. wrote of her 80th birthday party - so I suppose she had this taken at that time. A fine likeness." For more on Isabel Bevier's life and work see Beverly Bartow, "Isabel Bevier at the University of Illinois and the Home Economics Movement," Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society 72, no. 1 (February 1979): 21-38.
