Description
Paul Mellon, the son of Andrew W. Mellon, and his wife Mary on the porch of Andrew Mellon Hall. Andrew Mellon bought the house on Woodland Road in 1917 and promptly added a swimming pool, bowling alley, tennis courts, and a garden for Paul and his sister Ailsa. Paul attended Shadyside Academy and several schools in England in his early adult life. He returned to Pittsburgh in 1931 for an apprenticeship in banking. He married Mary Conover in 1935 and they spent a short time living in the Mellon house on Woodland Road before moving to Upperville, Virginia so that Paul could work in Washington DC for his father's dream of founding a National Gallery of Art. When Andrew Mellon died in 1937, Paul became the owner of the home in Pittsburgh and donated it to the College shortly after.
