Description
Student Jean Anne Conelly ('50) takes a break from painting to daydream at the snow around Fickes Hall. The former residence of Edwin Stanton and Marguerite Knapp Fickes was given to the College in 1943 and is used as a dormitory. It is a three story English Tudor style home built in 1927 on a two acre lot across the street from the Andrew Mellon mansion. Mr. Fickes (1872-1943) worked at the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), starting as a civil engineer and eventually becoming a Senior Vice President. He has been called an "aluminum pioneer." Due to increasing enrollment at the College, a large addition was added to Fickes Hall in the fall of 1946 which joined the main house to the existing garage which stood 100 feet behind it. Two additional stories were added to the garage, adding more room for students. The old garage was converted to a new kitchen and dining room with quarters for a cook and maid as well. The main part of the house also contains a computer lab, laundry area, and a variety of rooms for studying and lounging including a sun porch and patio.
