Title
Preparatory School students [?] in front of Dilworth Hall
Date
ca. 1907
Identifier
PCW000077
Description
In 1889, The Pennsylvania College for Women built Dilworth Hall to accommodate the increasing number of students enrolled in both its college courses and Preparatory School. The School provided a four year course in mathematics, English, Latin, history, and Bible, including two courses in other subjects such as physics, drawing, a third language or physiology. Students who were at least 12 years old and had successfully passed the 8th year of public school could be admitted. In 1907, the Preparatory School was separated from the College and Dilworth Hall was assigned for use by the younger students, while the college students used Berry Hall. As the city high schools of Pittsburgh improved their education of college-bound women, there was less need for the College to run its own school. The Preparatory School was gradually phased out and closed permanently in the spring of 1917.
