Description
On April 17, 1980, Bella Abzug spoke on "Equality of the Jewish Woman" in Chatham's Eddy Theater. A former congresswoman from New York City (1971-1976), Bella Abzug began her career as a labor and civil rights attorney, defending both a black man sentenced to death in Mississippi and individuals accused of Communist activities by Joe McCarthy. One of only a handful of women to attend law school in those days, Abzug graduated from Columbia University and was admitted to the bar in 1947. A famously outspoken feminist, she helped form Women Strike for Peace, which supported a nuclear test ban treaty and protested the Vietnam War in the 1960s. In Congress, she championed a variety of liberal causes, including open government, social justice, and the protection of the environment. When Abzug visited Chatham in 1980, she was very active in the international women’s movement, particularly with her involvement in the United Nations International Women’s Conferences. Abzug is shown here in one of her trademark hats.
