Description
The special Chatham holiday Toe Dabbling Day was first celebrated on campus in the 1960s. While Toe Dabbling Day always occurred in May, the exact date was a surprise. Chapel bells would ring before 7:30 a.m., signaling that classes would be cancelled and that everyone should meet at Mellon Pond for an all-campus picnic. Commenting on Toe Dabbling Day, Carol Posey writes in the 1976 Freshmen Handbook, "It is also traditional to throw people into the pond and everyone is considered fair game - even President Eddy!!!" Toe Dabbling Day was followed by a weekend of Spring Fling festivities on the quad. In the 1990s, Toe Dabbling Day evolved into Bucket and Blossom Day. On this day before Spring Fling weekend, classes are cancelled and everyone helps clean up the campus, plant flowers, and spread mulch. As on Toe Dabbling Day, an all-campus picnic is held on Bucket and Blossom Day.
