Description
In this photograph, Gateway program student Judy Anderson discusses a philosophy paper with Professor Will Aiken. Aiken received a bachelor's degree from Carleton College, a master of divinity from Yale University and a PhD in philosophy from Vanderbilt University. He began teaching at Chatham in 1976 and retired as the Division Chair of Philosophy and Religion in 2004, the same year the book he edited, "Philosophy and its Public Role," was published. While at Chatham, Aiken was an advocate of nature and for the importance of liberal arts education. He was also a member of the Pittsburgh Bach Choir and the Ethics Committee at Shadyside Hospital. Professor Aiken died on July 31, 2006 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 59 years old. Judy Anderson enrolled at Chatham through the Gateway Program, which encourages women to earn a college degree. With an interest in attending law school, Anderson wrote her tutorial on "American Realist Philosophy of Law and Attribution of Traits to Judges." After graduating magna cum laude, she went on to law school at Duquesne University.
