Description
The Grenville House is located on Fifth Avenue and belonged to Lewis Wenman Hicks (1871-1965). The original mansion had 14 rooms, 4 bathrooms, and a sun porch. The College acquired the property in 1967 and used the first two floors of the house and both floors of the six car garage for offices, storage, and an annex for the Library. Lewis Hicks was a prominent business man in Pittsburgh dealing with iron and coal. He was the Director of the Tarentum Savings and Trust Company as well as Vice President of the Allegheny Steel Company. He belonged to many social clubs including the Pittsburgh Press Club, the Duquesne Club, and the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. He was married to Ann Orr Armstrong, who was the daughter of Dr. John A. Armstrong from Armstrong County. The Hicks were members of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church and Lewis served on its Board of Trustees.
