Description
Dr. Edward Eddy, President of the College from 1960 to 1977, holds a discussion with a group of unidentified students. During his Presidency, Eddy added three new buildings to campus: the Jennie King Mellon Library, the Eddy Theatre, and a new dining hall. He also started the Gateway Program which provided support for adult women to attend classes. Also new was the the four week interim academic term in January. This short term created a time for a variety of intensive on- and off- campus study. Dr. Eddy graduated from Cornell University in 1944 and received a Master of Divinity from Yale in 1946. He went back to Cornell to get his Doctorate in 1956. His book "Colleges for Our Land and Time: The Land-Grant Idea in American Education" was published in 1957. Eddy left Chatham to become Provost and Deputy President at Penn State University. He died in 1998.
