Description
Pittsburgh architects Ingham & Boyd designed the Buhl Planetarium at a cost of $1.07 million. The octagonal dome is composed of copper; the building also has sculpted reliefs and Indiana limestone walls created by well-known sculptor, Sidney Waugh. The Planetarium was dedicated and opened to the public on October 24, 1939. The domed structure on the left was the Allegheny Post Office. It was built in an Italian Renaissance style with pale-gray granite. In the 1960s the building was saved from demolition by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, remolded, and reopened as a community museum. On June 12, 1983, with the relocation of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation to Station Square, the structure became the official home of the Pittsburgh’s Children’s Museum.
