Description
The H.J. Heinz Company was founded in 1869 by Henry John Heinz (1844-1919). By the early twentieth century, the main plant in Allegheny City had grown to a group of buildings covering ten city blocks and comprising 50 acres of floor space. The complex included preserving kitchens, bottling and packing departments, a box factory with automatic nailing machines, a can factory, and horse stables.
