Description
Caption on the front of the photograph reads, “PVCRR - Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston railroad round house to lower right of picture. Is now the Penna railroad. Old Bessie railroad track has narrow gauge. ran along side of Penna track that went into the mill. Coal from J & L mine up 30th St hill was hauled over Bessie track.” The Monongahela Valley Railroad Company was incorporated on April 8th, 1867, to build a line through Birmingham and to construct a branch across the Monongahela River at Port Perry to the Pennsylvania Railroad near Turtle Creek Station. On February 4, 1870, the corporate title of this company was changed to the Pittsburgh, Virginia & Charleston Railway Company. On April 1, 1905, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company acquired the franchises, corporate property, rights and credits of the Pittsburgh, Virginia & Charleston Railway Company.
