Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Church below railroad bridge – 1889. Johnstown Flood Picture.” The flood, which occurred on May 31, 1889, was the result of a breakage in the South Fork Dam above Johnstown. Twenty million tons of water almost completely destroyed much of Johnstown and the surrounding towns. Over 2,209 people died in the flood and thousands more were injured. The damage caused by the flood totaled $17 million, with 1600 homes and 280 businesses destroyed.
