Description
Many buildings (left center) were cleared making way for the construction of Mellon Square Park in the acre between Smithfield Street, Oliver and Sixth Avenues, and William Penn Place in downtown Pittsburgh. The demolished buildings included a number of small shops and restaurants, as well as better known buildings such as the old Davis Theater. On the right the William Penn Hotel can also be seen; it was one of the few buildings which survived the creation of Mellon Square. Enough material was removed from the construction site to fill the equivalent of 540 boxcars and enough concrete was poured into the hole to pack 90 boxcars solid. The 1.37-acre, $7.9 million park opened in 1955.
