Description
Manchester, founded in 1832, was named after a British industrial city in the center of England. The area grew through manufacturing in the nineteenth century. Business and industry developed along the Ohio River and houses were built several blocks further inland. Manchester was annexed by Allegheny City in the nineteenth century. When Allegheny was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907, Manchester became the Ohio River edge of the city’s North Side neighborhood. Over the years the area became identified with urban poverty and many of its Victorian homes fell into disrepair. In recent years, however, Manchester has undergone renewal and many of its homes have been renovated.
