Description
A view of Butler Street in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood. Lawrenceville, located about 3 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh and encompassing approximately 1350 acres, was established in 1814 by Colonel William B. Foster, father of the noted American folk song composer, Stephen Collins Foster. Initially, William Foster planned on naming the area “Fosterville,” instead he named it in honor of the War of 1812 hero, Captain James Lawrence of the frigate Chesapeake. In 1834 Lawrenceville was incorporated as a borough and in 1868 was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh. During the American Civil War the United States federal government selected Lawrenceville for the location of an arsenal. The arsenal provided as much as 1,200 workers with jobs for the war effort. Some of Pittsburgh’s most important industries had their roots in the neighborhood including, the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, a forerunner to Alcoa, Pittsburgh’s first distillery was located there, Andrew Carnegie’s industrial empire began production in Lawrenceville, and some of George Westinghouse’s earliest work was done in the neighborhood.
