Description
The Edgar Thomson Steel Works was built in 1874 by the Carnegie, McCandless & Company, which was organized on January 13, 1873. William Coleman, a principal partner in the firm, purchased the land on which the plant was to be built for $219,003.30. The land, located along the Monongahela River, later became known as Braddock. Two early firms located in the Braddock area, the McVay Walker Foundry and James McCrady provided construction materials and other aid to complete the construction of the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which was named in honor of John Edgar Thomson, the president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1903 the plant became part of United States Steel who currently still owns and operates the facility. It is one of the few remaining steelmaking plants in the Monongahela Valley. As of 2004 there are two blast furnaces still in operation on the site.
