Description
Homes on Ivy Street near South Negley Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood. Shadyside, located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s East End, is a very popular section of Pittsburgh that was known for its “Millionaire’s Row,” a grouping of mansions that lined Fifth Avenue in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Prominent figures in Pittsburgh’s industrial and business world owned homes on “Millionaire’s Row” including, William B. Negley, Andrew Carnegie, and Henry Clay Frick. Shadyside could have become an industrial hub following the creation of Pittsburgh’s first blast furnace in 1792. George Anshutz, Anthony Beelan, and William Amberson teamed up and developed and operated the furnace in Shadyside, however, it ceased operations because of lack of resources a few years later. Today, Shadyside is a popular cultural and shopping area that attracts university students, young professionals, artists, and affluent residents.
