Description
A street scene on North Duquesne Avenue in the City of Duquesne in Allegheny County. The area that is now the City of Duquesne was originally part of Mifflin Township in Allegheny County, which covered a large tract of land south of the Monongahela River. Duquesne has been referred to as a “steel town,” beginning with the construction of the Duquesne Steel Company plant there in 1886. Duquesne was incorporated into a city in 1891 and by 1916 the population had grown to 19,000 people, making the city the fourth largest in Allegheny County. The Carnegie Library of Duquesne, the third built in the Monongahela Valley, was built with $300,000 donated by Andrew Carnegie. The library was so large that it housed a gymnasium with an Olympic-size swimming pool and a music hall. The structure was razed in 1968 because it was too costly to operate. By 1950 the population had expanded to over 17,000, with about 16 percent of the population foreign-born, reflecting the large number of immigrants who came to the mill town.
