Description
A view of fire-damaged buildings in Braddock, Pennsylvania, on Second Avenue at Grace Street. Braddock covers an area of about 0.56 square miles and is located within Allegheny County, approximately seven miles east of the City of Pittsburgh. The Borough of Braddock, established in the 1700, has a rich history and prospered very early on from the establishment of the Edgar Thompson Steel Works, founded by Andrew Carnegie. The Carnegie Library of Braddock, was the first Carnegie Library built in the United States, dedicated on March 30th, 1889, second in the world after a Carnegie Library built in Andrew Carnegie's home town of Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1881. The library, located on Library Street, is still in use today. As a major employer for the area, Edgar Thomson drew immigrants from around the world and the success of the Works spurred much construction in the borough. In 2001 the plant, among the most modern and productive integrated steelmakers in the world, was awarded the Department of Energy Office of Industrial Technology's plant of the year award. Edgar Thomson's 800 employees produce about 2.8 million tons of raw steel each year.
