Description
A new diesel towboat (after smoke control) on the Monongahela River. In May 1949 Allegheny County enacted a Smoke Control Ordinance, which regulated the production and emission of smoke from any chimney, smokestack, or other source within the limits of Allegheny County. Included within the provision of this ordinance were towboats. Subsequently, diesel-powered towboats, such as the one shown in the photograph, became generally used. The towboat shown is the "Vesta," built at Neville Island, Pennsylvania, by Dravo Corporation in 1951. Note that this is the third towboat to carry this name; the first was a steam sternwheeler later renamed the "Hercules" and the second was renamed the "J. S. Lewis."
