Description
Also known as the “Panhandle Bridge” this structure was built in 1903 by the American Bridge Company. The first bridge was built on this site in 1863. The rail line that it served was part of the route built by the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad Company, a division of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and Saint Louis Railroad. Because the line ran west to Steubenville, Ohio, crossing the “panhandle of West Virginia” the line and this bridge received the nickname “panhandle.” Since 1985 this route has been used as part of the ”T” light rail system operated by the Allegheny County Port Authority. In the left background is the Liberty Bridge along with the Liberty Tunnels are visible.
