Description
Caption on back of photograph reads, “Koppers Company Research Lab Verona. Pilot plants-chemicals and plastics – to determine facts in actual production of same.” In 1900 a committee was appointed by the President of U. S. Steel Corporation to study uses for U. S. Steel’s reserves of low volatile coal. Out of the work of this committee grew the by-product coke industry. In subsequent years Koppers built the majority of coke plants in the United States. In addition, Koppers supplied coal tar, one of the most important products of the coke ovens. Coal tar was used for the construction of highways, and pharmaceutical manufacturers used coal tar chemicals in the preparation of various medicines.
