Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Spectrographic Laboratory in Building D at the Central Experiment Station. This equipment is used to determine the chemical elements present in dusts, minerals, coal and other materials. Spectrometric analysis is particularly valuable in determining elements that occur only as traces in other materials, such as analyzing coal or coal-ash for germanium.” Dating back to 1910 when the United States Congress created the Bureau of Mines, the Central Experiment Station was located at 4800 Forbes Avenue, in Pittsburgh’s Oakland section.
