Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Smoke room in Central Experiment Station is used to train miners and students in use of equipment. This barrier represents ventilation ‘overcast’ in a coal mine. Room can be sealed and noxious fumes introduced to resemble conditions following mine fire or explosion.” This Central Experiment Station, part of the United States Bureau of Mines, was located at 4800 Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Oakland section. The Pittsburgh campus dates back to 1910 when Congress created the United States Bureau of Mines.
